NEW JERSEY STATE EXEMPT FIREMEN’S ASSOCIATION

Who We Are

WHAT IS THE NEW JERSEY STATE EXEMPT FIREMEN’S ASSOCIATION?

The State Exempt Association is comprised of members from the local exempt organizations throughout the state of New Jersey. The association was originally formed in 1889 to establish harmony of action, insure prosperity and success, promote the best interest of its members, to cultivate and perpetuate a fraternal friendship among its members. Today over 120 years later, the Association has evolved into a charitable organization that provides services so integral to the organization and stability of the exempt firemen’s local associations that the NJSEFA lessens the burdens of government in the process.

The organization consists of fire fighters who have earned their exempt firemen’s
certificates and have chosen to form a local exempt firemen’s association.  All of the local associations through out the state, comprise the membership of the New Jersey State Exempt Firemen’s Association, Inc.

The organization consists of the individual local exempt firemen’s association who are in turn, made up of firefighters who have earned their exempt firemen’s certificate and have chosen to form a local exempt firemen’s association.  All of the local associations throughout the State comprise the membership of the New Jersey State Exempt firemen’s association, Inc.  Currently there are 356 member organizations, with a total membership of over ???? individual exempt firefighters.
In addition to having membership in the State Exempt Association, each local exempt firemen’s association also elects three representatives to the local relief association, which in turn strengthens your local relief association.

HOW DO YOU BECOME AN EXEMPT FIREFIGHTER ?

Who can become an exempt firefighter? New Jersey State Statute 40A:14-56 provides that any person who joins a municipal fire department and attends 60% (before 2009) and 50% (starting in 2009) of fires and drills for seven years is entitled to an exempt firefighter’s certificate.

HOWEVER, The exempt status is not automatic
.
A four (4) part form (printed in red ink and is available HERE or from the New Jersey State Firemen’s Association in Kenilworth) 111-A, 111B, 111-C, 111-D needs to be completely filled out, with the appropriate signatures and seals affixed.  This form is then sent (or brought) to the respective County Clerk’s Office where it is recorded. Part 111-D is retained by the County Clerk.  The remaining three (3) parts are returned to (local relief secretary) you.  Part 111-C is given to the exempt firefighter.  Part 111-B is forwarded to the New Jersey State Firemen’s Association in Kenilworth, where it is kept on file.  Part 111-A is kept on file by the local exempt association.

NOTE:
Only when the four part form has been recorded by the respective County Clerk, does the firefighter attain exempt status.
DO YOU HAVE A LOCAL EXEMPT FIREMEN’S ASSOCIATION?
Check the list of Local Associations.  If your municipality is not listed you may want to follow the simple process outlined below to form an association.

HOW DO YOU FORM A LOCAL EXEMPT FIREMEN’S ASSOCIATION?

Step #1 requires that you have at least ten (10) exempt members in order to form a local exempt association.

Step #2 is to hold your first local exempt organization meeting to elect your officers.  As soon as you elect your officers, you need to fill out the incorporation paperwork for the State of New Jersey and submit this paperwork with the application fee to our (N.J. State Exempt Firemen’s Association) Record Keeper William Egbert, 25 Little Lane, Wharton, N. J. 07885 – phone 1.973.366.6835.  William will in turn file the paperwork for you with the State of New Jersey and act as your registered agent.  By having William act as your registered agent, you insure that the incorporation status of your organization does not lapse and possibly place you out of accord with the N. J. State Firemen’s Association and not be able to seat your exempt delegate in Wildwood.  It also saves you the trouble of changing your address with the state every time you change officers.

Step #3.  Once you are incorporated with the State of New Jersey, your formal application to become a member of the New Jersey State Exempt Firemen’s Association can be processed.  Again, our Record Keeper William Egbert will assist you with this process.
